The cast of Kagurabachi is the people who held Kunishige Rokuhira’s Enchanted Blades, the people who sold them, and the people still paying for the Seitei War. Eighteen years after the treaty, the six wartime swords are stolen property. Enten, the seventh, is the only blade built as a retraction rather than a weapon of state. Most of the names on this page are defined by which contract they signed, which they broke, and who they refused to spend.
A Lifelong Contract binds an Enchanted Blade to one nervous system. The bearer’s innate sorcery goes dark until the contract is cut. Magatsumi is the master key: if Akemura Soga dies, the other five wartime bearers die with him. That knot is why the Kamunabi keep a monster in a basement instead of executing him, and why the Hishaku spent three years trying to open contracts by killing bearers. Destroy Magatsumi and the knot comes apart. Until then every rescue is also a logistics problem, who holds the steel, who can move it, who dies if the wrong man is cut down.
The Kamunabi are the state. Rebuilt from the Counter-Sorcery Army, they want the blades under seal and the remaining bearers locked in Sanso fortresses. Hiyuki Kagari is their pointed end. The Hishaku are ten criminal sorcerers with flame tattoos and a shared fire-gate. Yura ordered the raid that killed Kunishige. They sold Cloud Gouger to Sojo, listed Magatsumi at the Rakuzaichi, and signed a private contract with Samura. The Sazanami are older than both: two centuries of auction, a Storehouse that warehouses loot and people, a household military called the Tou. Hakuri is the error that ends the firm.
Around Chihiro sit the people who will not let the hunt spend innocents. Togo Shiba left the Kamunabi when the smith hid. Char Kyonagi is the last of a regenerative clan Sojo wanted as a stabilizer. Iori Samura was memory-sealed until she chose to protect someone. The Masumi served her father. The wartime bearers, Samura, Uruha, Akemura, Ibuki, Subaru, and the still-unnamed, are the war’s unpaid invoice. This encyclopedia is arranged by who they are to the blades, not by who won the press.
Hokuto is the Hishaku swordsman who opened Cloud Gouger’s contract by killing Ibuki. Kuguri is Twilight Wave and the unwilling Iai instructor at the Kyoto hotel. Natsuki is Lightning Menace, the brother who kept training. Kasen is the director who leaked the address. Tafuku is Hiyuki’s duel-domain partner. Kiri Shirakai is the granddaughter who brought an odachi to a school that told her not to. The rest of the named ten: Toto reads blood and holds the fire-gate; Yukisada is seventeen and a building; Bingo feeds lion-dancer charms on corpses; Uran froze the workshop the night the smith died. Two of the ten are still unnamed.
