Overview
Before the Seitei War, Kunishige sold swords to people he could stand, which meant he barely ate. The Kamunabi’s Datenseki research went nowhere for two years. Shiba believed Kunishige’s eyes, his ability to see what the ore was doing, were the only way to make the mineral usable. He was right. The Enchanted Blades turned the war. They also made possible the Malediction.
After Akemura used Magatsumi to kill the remaining island population, Kunishige confiscated all six blades, hid with help from Azami and Shiba, and raised Chihiro in a workshop over a cellar full of swords he could not break. Every attempt to destroy them failed. Enten, forged with his son nearly fifteen years after the war, was the first blade built as a counter rather than a weapon of state.
The goldfish
The three goldfish in the house, later Kuro, Aka, and Nishiki, are the emotional core of Enten. Hokazono has said he almost used koi, then realized goldfish better recorded the small contest of who the fish liked more. That domestic joke becomes Chihiro’s entire fighting style.
Death
Three Hishaku sorcerers raided the house, killed Kunishige in front of Chihiro, and took the six wartime blades. Enten stayed with the son. The Kamunabi later learned a director had leaked the address. The smith’s last work is still trying to finish the job he could not do with a hammer.
Personality
Before the war he sold swords to people he could stand, which meant he barely ate. That pickiness is not a gag. It is the same organ as the later hermit: he would rather starve than put steel in the wrong hands, and then the state handed him a mineral that made “the wrong hands” a national problem. He is not a saint in flashback. He is a weapons dealer who stabilized a cursed ore, won a war, and tried to raise a child over a cellar of failures.
The household is the other half. Goldfish, not koi. A small contest over who the fish liked more. He forged Enten with Chihiro nearly fifteen years after the war because the wartime six would not break, and because a son needed a blade whose success condition was fewer blades. The public myth is the hero smith. The house myth is a man who could not smash his own work and would not stop trying.
He trusted Akemura. That is the sentence the rest of the book is paying for. Chiaki Soga, Akemura’s sister, Chihiro’s mother, is the marriage that ties the Rokuhira workshop to the Soga prophecy line. When the flowers finished their work, Kunishige confiscated the six blades and disappeared. He did not file a protest. He hid, and he kept the steel where a child could see it and a director could eventually sell the address.
Abilities
Kunishige’s sight is the only thing that ever made Datenseki usable. About 250 kilograms of the ore are known. Unprocessed, it pops the user. The Kamunabi’s research went nowhere for two years. Shiba believed the smith’s eyes, his ability to see what the ore was doing, were the only way to cut it into katana that overflow as shapes instead of craters. He was right. Spirit energy becomes too large for the body and leaves as goldfish, clouds, flowers, feathers, oiran.
He forged six wartime Enchanted Blades and, later, Enten. Most blades have three named techniques and a True Realm when the wielder’s intent locks with the sword. Magatsumi refuses the three-count. Every attempt to destroy the wartime six failed. Enten is the tool he built instead: a sword whose True Realm is the death of Magatsumi. Nishiki’s resistance kit is that brief made visible.
He is not a combatant in the present story. His work is the combat. Lifelong Contracts bind each blade to one nervous system; Magatsumi’s contract is the master key. He understood enough of that knot to hide the steel rather than hand it back to the bureau that had just called a massacre a victory. These chapters are the smithing manual: how a pair of eyes made a mineral into seven national sins. Hokazono talked to a real swordsmith so the workshop pages would not be cosplay.
Story role
Kunishige is dead before chapter 1 finishes, and he is still the most important off-page character in Part 1. The raid is the wound. The cellar is the inheritance. Every later argument about the blades, Sojo’s factory, Yura’s collection, the Kamunabi’s seals, Chihiro’s refusal to spend bystanders, is a reading of the man who made them.
In the Seitei War he enters at plus one year and five months. The blades reverse the front. After the treaty, Akemura uses Malediction anyway. Kunishige confiscates the six, hides with Azami and Shiba, and raises Chihiro in isolation. Enten is forged with the boy as a teenager, about fifteen years after the war, three years before the present. Then Kasen leaks the address. Three Hishaku sorcerers kill him in front of his son. Ibuki Misaka, Cloud Gouger’s war bearer, is murdered in the same campaign. The remaining bearers go into Sanso.
Part 2 returns to the Irishima talks: Kunishige is still a picky weapons dealer who has not yet looked at the ore. Chiaki is still Princess Soga. Shiba is still a Soga guardian. Mashiro is still alive. The war book is the forge the present-day plot has been standing on since the first goldfish.
Relationships
Chihiro is the son he trained as smith and swordsman, and the reason Enten exists. The bowl of fish is their daily life made into a moveset. Akemura was the most trusted friend and is Chiaki’s younger brother; the Malediction is what that trust cost. Chiaki Soga is the partner named in the infobox, foresight as inherited proof of Izanami, the Soga warrant, the mother the war arc opens on.
Shiba grew up with him, believed in the eyes, left the Kamunabi when the smith disappeared, and is still Chihiro’s ride into town. Azami helped hide the house. Kasen, years later, still thinks the blades are a path to order, which is how you get a director leaking a smith’s address to the Hishaku. Sojo loved the work and never met the man. That gap is the first rival’s entire personality.
The wartime bearers, Samura, Uruha, Akemura, Ibuki Misaka, Subaru Urita, and the still-unnamed, are his customers in the worst sense. He gave them swords that won a war and then spent the rest of his life trying to unmake the ending. Uruha treated the Rokuhira name as a vocation. Samura carried the guilt. Chihiro is the retraction walking around in a black coat.

The colleague and the kiln
Subaru Urita took a liking to him immediately: another smith, impossible eyes, a project that would become six war crimes and a seventh apology. Subaru is a sushi chef first. Kunishige is a picky weapons dealer who barely ate. Together they start the Enchanted Blades. Part 2’s smelting chapters (125–129) are that start, shown as labor. Chapter 129, Ironworks, puts Chiaki in the fire as the reason he keeps his eyes open. Shiba is already the friend who will not let him quit. Mashiro is still alive and still opposed to stealing ore for a civilian. Hasumi’s lab is still failing.
Kasen later leaks the address because a director thinks order lives in Magatsumi. Azami and Kudo spent political capital the other way. The raid is three Hishaku, including Hokuto and Uran. Enten stays with the son. The wartime six leave. Volume 12 will carry “Kunishige Rokuhira” and “Swordsmith” as present-tense titles before the war book opens. Cypic voice: Tomokazu Seki.
