Overview
Sojo is not Hishaku. He is a customer. They handed him Cloud Gouger in early October; he used it to chase Char and to chase the idea that he could mass-produce Kunishige. He is cruel, curious, and sincere about the smith in a way Chihiro recognizes with disgust.
Fight
The Anti-Cloud Gouger Special Forces die around him. Chihiro loses an arm and still reaches the True Realm first. Enten cuts Cloud Gouger in half, the first time one of Kunishige’s wartime swords is shown to be mortal. Sojo fuses with unstable Datenseki rather than admit the experiment failed. The compound goes with him.
Chihiro keeps the pieces. Even a dead blade can still spend a few charges of Mei.
Personality
He is cruel, curious, and sincere about the smith in a way Chihiro recognizes with disgust. TV Tropes files him as a loony fan and it is not wrong. It is incomplete. He is the only early villain who can talk about the Enchanted Blades without sounding like a government memo. He wants to mass-produce Kunishige. He wants Char’s clan as a stabilizer. He wants Cloud Gouger to “gain slaughter” and is delighted when it does. That last wish is True Realm as autobiography.
He is not Hishaku. He is a customer. They handed him Cloud Gouger in early October; he used it to chase Char and to chase the idea that he could fake the eyes that made Datenseki safe. The bathhouse extras packed with the tankōbon, Sōjō Gen’ichi no Ofuro Tanbō, rate tubs off the murder clock. It is the same curiosity. He wants to know how a thing is built: a blade, a body, a bath. The extra does not apologize for chapter 18. It reminds you he was a person with hobbies while he was a disaster.
Fandom without the household becomes a factory. He never saw the bowl, the picky dealer, the cellar of swords that would not break. He understood the craft as slaughter and called that honesty. Chihiro understood the house. Every later monster is a larger Sojo argument. Yura is the collector. Akemura is the patriot who finished the thought. Hiruhiko is the child who thinks friendship is a stage.
Abilities
Cloud Gouger, Kuregumo, leaves the body as clouds and cloud-dragons. Mei is lightning: a bolt, a charge delay, then the extension Sojo finds first, cloaked Mei, wearing the lightning instead of throwing it. Yui is ice, instant cages and constructs. Kou is water or mist; it exists to make the other two worse. Water is a wire. Ice is a larger Yui. It is a craftsman’s weather kit, which is why he loved it.
He is the first person in the series to show an Enchanted Blade extension. True Realm, in his hands, is slaughter locking with the sword. The Anti-Cloud Gouger Special Forces were six people built to solve one weather system. They were not enough. When Enten bisects the blade, he fuses with unstable Datenseki rather than admit the experiment failed. The compound goes with him. The ore pops the user. He knew that. He chose the crater.
The war bearer was Ibuki Misaka, killed by Hokuto in the same campaign that took Kunishige. Sojo is the later customer. After he dies, Chihiro briefly contracts the dying sword and spends residual Mei at the Rakuzaichi, including Mei: Shred, lightning that turns black because the blade is dying. Fragments remain. Even a dead Kunishige sword can still spend a few charges.
Story role
Sojo is the first major rival and the thesis of the opening book. Three years after the raid, Chihiro and Shiba work the Tokyo underworld. Char says she has seen an Enchanted Blade. Norisaku Madoka confirms Sojo has Cloud Gouger. Azami wants Chihiro away from that man. Chihiro stays. Sojo takes Char. The Special Forces stage an ambush while Chihiro hits the compound. Four of the six die. Hagiwara loses his legs. Kazane loses an arm. Chihiro loses an arm and still reaches the True Realm first.
Enten cuts Cloud Gouger. It is the first time a wartime blade is shown to be mortal. Sojo chooses Datenseki suicide over a quiet death. Chapter 18 is titled for the roar. The series has now taught its rules: Lifelong Contracts, Datenseki as a bomb, government squads that are not enough, and a protagonist who will spend his body without spending Char. Everything later, auction, bearers, Magatsumi, is a larger version of this argument.
He does not appear in the Rakuzaichi or Sword Bearer arcs except as pieces. Chihiro walks into the 208th auction with Cloud Gouger’s stump. The last charges take Enten back from the Storehouse. The Hishaku sold him the sword and then watched their customer die on a stone they also wanted mass-produced. He was useful. He was never one of the ten.
Relationships
Chihiro is the other reader of Kunishige in the room. Chapter 9 is the first time they occupy the same panel. Chihiro hates him and recognizes him. Kunishige is the obsession: a smith Sojo never met and a body of work he wants to industrialize. Char and her mother were inventory, Kyonagi cells as the stabilizer Kunishige’s eyes had been. That is why he hunts her and why Chihiro’s decision to keep her is the first time the revenge plot has to share the page with a living person who is not a combatant.
Yura is the seller, not a colleague. The Hishaku handed him Cloud Gouger in early October and let a customer test the product. Azami of the Kamunabi wants Chihiro away from him; the Anti-Cloud Gouger Special Forces are the state’s attempt to solve one sword with six people. They fail around him. Hokuto killed the original bearer. Sojo inherited a stolen weather system and treated it as a research grant.

He is thirty. Birthday June 6. He dies in the Datenseki backlash after Enten bisects Cloud Gouger. Volume 2’s jacket is Chihiro and Sojo, night steel versus storm cyan, blood on black. The Japanese title is Enten vs. Cloud Gouger. Chapter 8’s color page opens his book; chapter 9 is the clash; chapter 14 puts True Realm in the vocabulary; chapter 18 is the roar.
The bathhouse extras live in the tankōbon, not in the magazine. Hokazono has named Chihiro versus Sojo as his favorite fight drawn so far. The original bearer
Cloud Gouger had a master before the customer. Ibuki Misaka was Samura’s equal in the war, retired afterward, and was murdered by Hokuto so the Lifelong Contract would open. Yura sold the weather sword to Sojo in early October. Recaps that start the blade with Sojo are doing Ibuki’s grave a disservice. Sojo found cloaked Mei. He did not invent weather. He was the worst reader of a sword that already had a brief.
Natsuki, the younger Misaka, kept training and still wants to stand beside bearers the press named. Lightning Menace is voltage in the body, not Mei. Volume 10 puts Natsuki on a jacket with Hokuto. Sojo is already dead by then, a bathhouse extra packed next to a Datenseki suicide. The customer is a Volume 2 problem. The contract-opening is a Hishaku method.
