Summary
Three years after the raid, Chihiro and Shiba work the Tokyo underworld. The hunt is not yet a government job. It is a swordsmith’s son and the friend who stayed, taking underworld contracts that might lead to a stolen blade. Cafe tables, cheap meals, a coat already black. Then Char Kyonagi says she has seen an Enchanted Blade, and the revenge plot has to share the page with a living person who is not a combatant.
Norisaku Madoka confirms what the sighting meant: Genichi Sojo has Cloud Gouger. Sojo is not Hishaku. He is a customer. They handed him the sword in early October; he used it to chase Char and to chase the idea that he could mass-produce Kunishige. Azami of the Kamunabi wants Chihiro away from that man. Chihiro stays. The decision is the first time the book tells you the protagonist will not file a child as acceptable loss.
Sojo wanted Datenseki that did not explode. He thought Kyonagi cells were the stabilizer Kunishige’s eyes had been. Char and her mother were inventory. When Sojo takes Char, the underworld job becomes a rescue. The Anti-Cloud Gouger Special Forces, six people built to solve one sword, stage an ambush while Chihiro hits the compound. Four of the six die. Hagiwara loses his legs. Kazane loses an arm. The state’s best offer is a specialist squad that still dies around the weather.
Chihiro loses an arm and still finds the True Realm. Enten cuts Cloud Gouger in half, the first time one of Kunishige’s wartime swords is shown to be mortal. Sojo fuses with unstable Datenseki rather than admit the experiment failed. The compound goes with him. Chihiro keeps the pieces. Even a dead blade can still spend a few charges of Mei.
Cast
Chihiro Rokuhira is eighteen and already treating Enten as a partner rather than a trophy. Togo Shiba is the adult in the room without a national weapon: teleportation as infiltration, extraction, the only exit. Char is the last of a clan hunted for the way their flesh heals. She can close her own wounds and other people’s. That is why everyone wants her and why she sits with the fighters.
Sojo is thirty, an underworld arms dealer, cruel and sincere about the smith in a way Chihiro recognizes with disgust. He talks about the Enchanted Blades without sounding like a government memo. He wants Cloud Gouger to “gain slaughter” and is delighted when it does. Azami is the Kamunabi face who still remembers Kunishige as a person and still cannot make Chihiro stand down. Madoka is the informant who confirms the sword. Hagiwara and Kazane are the named remnants of the six: a commander who loses his legs, a specialist who loses an arm. The rest of the squad is the book’s first proof that “elite” is a job title, not a guarantee.
Key fights
The early underworld work is the series learning how Chihiro moves, observe, copy, spend as little civilian blood as the job allows. Madoka’s confirmation is the first time Cloud Gouger’s weather kit is a rumor with a name: Mei, Yui, Kou. Lightning, ice, water. A craftsman’s storm. Sojo’s cloaked Mei is the first extension the book shows: instead of throwing the lightning, wear it.
The compound fight is the one Hokazono has named as his favorite so far. Chihiro hits the building while the Anti-Cloud Gouger Forces try to solve the same man from another angle. They do not. Chihiro reaches Honryō first, True Realm as what the wielder wants the steel to do when they finally mean it, not a transformation gauge. Enten’s cut is the point. Wartime swords were sold as immortal. Chapter 18, “Roar,” files the correction. Sojo’s last choice is the ore. He would rather become a crater than a quiet failure.
Rules the arc teaches
Lifelong Contracts bind a blade to one nervous system and shut the bearer’s innate sorcery off. Datenseki amplifies spirit energy the way the blades do, without the stabilizing cut; unprocessed, it pops the user. Enchanted Blades are the rare version that overflow as weather instead of craters. Sojo is trying to fake Kunishige’s eyes and producing stones that hold for a few minutes. Long enough to kill later. Not long enough to be a smith.
Government squads are not the cavalry. Six specialists. Four die. That is the state’s best offer against one stolen sword. Chihiro will spend his body without spending Char. That single rule is the whole difference between him and every adult who touched a blade in the war. True Realm is autobiography. Sojo wanted slaughter; the sword gained it. Enten wanted a household object to cut a weapon; it did.
Sojo is a customer, not a founder. Recaps that blur him into the Hishaku cannot later explain Yura. The men who killed Kunishige sold him a sword. He loved the work and never met the house. Fandom without the household becomes a factory. The worst-fan essay is the longer version of that sentence.
Aftermath
Chihiro leaves the compound with a missing arm, a bisected Cloud Gouger, and a child who can heal. The pieces of Kuregumo stay with him. He will spend their last charges at the Rakuzaichi and keep the fragments after. Char stays. Azami’s warning stays unanswered. The underworld job has become a public argument about who the blades are for.
Volume 1, Mission, holds the workshop-to-sighting chapters. Volume 2, Enten vs. Cloud Gouger, is the duel and the crater. Everything later, the 208th auction, the bearers in their Sanso, Magatsumi on a block, is a larger version of this argument. A protagonist who will not spend civilians. A fan who will. A government that arrives late and calls the survivors elite.
Why the arc matters
This is the series teaching you the rules: Lifelong Contracts, Datenseki as a bomb, government squads that are not enough, and a protagonist who will spend his body without spending Char. Sojo is the dark mirror of Kunishige-love. Everything later, auction, bearers, Magatsumi, is a larger version of this argument.
