The Anti-Cloud Gouger Special Forces exist because Cloud Gouger in Sojo’s hands was a national problem. Six sorcerers. One commander. The job was to put the weather sword down or keep it from coming back. Four die at the compound. The commander loses both legs. The newest member loses an arm before her secret weapon is the scene. Two survivors. That was the cavalry. Chihiro meets them as proof that a named unit is not the same as a True Realm, then meets the leftover commander later as proof the unit outlives the sword.
They are Kamunabi operations, not leadership. Kasen does not bleed here. Hiyuki is a different pointed end. The ACG are specialists the way Sanso is a box: the state’s idea of a matching piece. Cloud Gouger is weather. The unit is six people who practiced for weather. Sojo is a fan who will spend civilians and specialists the same way he spends praise for a dead smith. Full arc: Vs. Sojo.
The roster
Ikuto Hagiwara (萩原 幾兎), commander. Jikai (磁戒), magnetism. Loses both legs. Later hallucinates Kugara. Chapter 98: “Ikuto Hagiwara, Worthless Commander.” Still useful in headquarters when Yukisada holds the barrier.
Hajime Kugara (具柄 一), iron body, mask, childhood friend of Hagiwara since age five. Dies. The hallucination’s face. The book will not let the commander keep his legs or his friend. It lets him keep the face as a wound. File: Kugara.
Kazane Machi (真智 カザネ), newest. Demon Monster (怪魑, Kaichi), the unused secret weapon. Sojo takes the right arm first. A reserve that does not get to be a reserve.
Shiyumi Harima (張間 梓弓), Gansui (岩垂), stone. Kiyohiko Uzuki (卯月 清彦), binding spells. Makoto Kasahara (笠原 誠), enlarged hands. Named. Kit now has rooms. Four graves among the six. The chapters name Kugara dead, Kazane maimed, Hagiwara maimed, two walking.
What the unit teaches
Chapter titles in the first book move from meals to swords: “Enten vs. Cloud Gouger,” “True Realm,” “Roar.” The ACG occupy the hospital and compound stretch as the government offering a matching piece and then watching the piece fail. Four of six is not a plot twist. It is the thesis Hiyuki will later embody from the other direction: the state has pointed ends, and pointed ends snap. Chihiro loses an arm and finds the brief. Sojo chooses Datenseki over a quiet death. Cloud Gouger breaks. Residual charges wait for the Rakuzaichi. The unit does not get a victory banner. It gets a commander with a cruel title and a post that still exists because institutions keep their damaged specialists.
When headquarters fills with leftovers, the ACG survivors are still in the building. Yukisada cannot be killed cleanly. Magnetism is not regeneration. Hakuri’s Storehouse is the tool that works. Hagiwara’s presence is the state’s stubbornness: send the Cloud Gouger commander at the next impossible object. The object is seventeen.
What they are not
They are not the Masumi. They are not the Kokugoku Steam Squad (Fushimi, Smoke Axe, dead to Hiruhiko). They are not Hiyuki and Tafuku. They are one sword’s task force.
