In an Asahi interview, the one @brkagurabachi translated and ComicBook picked up, Hokazono said he wanted an exaggerated Hollywood Japan: the town you get excited about as a Japanese kid watching John Wick’s idea of a street. Swords. A bowl of fish. White, black, and red because the hero’s coat is already stained.
“I really intended to go with koi until the last minute, but when finalizing the storyboard, I realized that goldfish would be easier to symbolize the daily life between Chihiro and his father. Plus, it’s about the ratio of the body to the fins. With koi, the body is long, and even if you draw the fins beautifully, they end up looking chubby.”
That is the whole joke of the YouTube “koi = perseverance” essays. Carp would have been a weapon-shaped fish. Goldfish are a household object. Fantails give him three silhouettes. The bowl is a contest over who the fish like more, a father-and-son bit that becomes Kuro, Aka, and Nishiki the first time Chihiro draws.
The three fish in the Rokuhira house are the emotional core of Enten. Kuro paints arm and edge in black water and throws a cut the size of the fish you called. Shred spends more spirit to throw many small ones. Aka drinks a technique and lets you speak it back for a short window. Nishiki is the tricolor cloak: speed, density, and a built-in resistance to other Enchanted Blade ailments. The household made into armor. A wartime blade manifests weather, flowers, banquet ghosts. Enten manifests the kitchen.
Hokazono’s other line from that interview is the palette law the jackets still obey. “In a revenge tale where the protagonist’s clothes are stained black with blood, the colors white, black, and red match well.” Volume 1 is rusty ruby asphalt, white logotype, Kuro overhead. Later books invite one extra hue when a rival blade is on stage, cyan for Cloud Gouger, snow for Volume 11. The fish stay in the triad. Official art still sells all three. The 2026 anime teaser puts Aka, Kuro, and Nishiki behind Chihiro and Enten because Cypic understood the assignment: the cute thing is the fighting language.
At Anime NYC 2025 he said it again, shorter: he has always thought goldfish could be cool, and he really wanted one in the book. Favorite fight he has drawn so far: Chihiro vs Sojo. Most nervous: any later blade-on-blade climax. The fish stayed cute on purpose so the sword fights would not. That is craft, not branding. If the bowl had been carp, YouTube would have been right about perseverance and wrong about the house. He threw the carp out on the storyboard.
Chapter 1 puts the bowl on the table before anyone calls a technique. The first-read notes file this as furniture first. The Enten essay files it as the brief: a retraction that looks like a life.
