Naruto is the reason he tried; his editor has said it out loud, and Weekend Weebs logged the quote when people started the “is Flame Bone just Susanoo” thread. Early one-shots show it. The serial shows it less, except when a support blade sprouts an owl over Japan.

He grew up on Jump. He started drawing during college lockdown. The Tezuka Enten is not Kagurabachi’s seventh blade, different kanji, different story, but it is the same hunger for a named sword in a magazine that still sells named swords. Roku no Meiyaku is the short that already knew how to end on a debt. Two years later the weekly would end Part 1 on “Swordsmith.”
The Jump start
Kagurabachi starts in Weekly Shōnen Jump 2023 #42, on 19 September. First long work. Promo art: black coat, white type, three goldfish. English Twitter invented a career for it before page one existed. Chapter 1 was the most-viewed new title on MANGA Plus in its first week. By April 2024 the app had logged over 99 million page views and beat Spy × Family, Dragon Ball Super, and Boruto on the global ranking. Highest-voted title in a Manga Plus AX poll over Sakamoto Days, RuriDragon, and Blue Box.
Jump Comics volumes started 2 February 2024 in Japan. VIZ’s English tankōbon arrived 5 November 2024. Next Manga Award, print category, 2024. Nominations later for Shogakukan, Kodansha, and an Eisner international slot. Circulation: 1 million by October 2024, 2.2 million by May 2025, 3 million by October 2025, 4 million by April 2026. Eleven Japanese volumes by May 2026; volume 12 listed for 4 September. An anime from Cypic, directed by Tetsuya Takeuchi, is scheduled for April 2027. The 2023 meme had to survive being liked for real. The pages did the surviving. The meme page keeps the hashtag history; this page keeps the person who had to draw Sunday after the joke.
What he cites
The Asahi interview, the one @brkagurabachi translated and ComicBook picked up, is the goldfish document. He wanted an exaggerated Hollywood Japan: the town you get excited about as a Japanese kid watching John Wick’s idea of a street. Swords. A bowl of fish. White, black, and red because the hero’s coat is already stained. He intended koi until the last minute, then threw them out on the storyboard: goldfish symbolized the daily life between Chihiro and his father, and the fin-to-body ratio did not look chubby. Tarantino, Fincher, and Nolan are the directors he grew up excited by. The Hollywood-Japan crush is not a mood board. It is why the streets look like a kid’s idea of a movie and the bowl looks like a kitchen.
Anime NYC 2025: he walked into a room that was not billed as a main event and found it stuffed. ANN’s write-up is the useful one. He said it again, shorter: he has always thought goldfish could be cool, and he really wanted one in the book. Favorite fight he has drawn so far: Chihiro vs Sojo. Most nervous: any later blade-on-blade climax. Katsuhiro Ōtomo books in the office as reference. Western action, he has named Captain America: The Winter Soldier as a Kagurabachi influence. He has also been placed, by interviewers and by his own lists, near Chainsaw Man, Ajin, Attack on Titan, and My Hero Academia. The useful reading is not “he stole X.” It is that he likes movies that cut, then sit in the quiet.
He talked to a real swordsmith so the workshop pages would not be cosplay. Part 2’s smelting chapters are that homework coming due. The editor’s Naruto quote is why Flame Bone / Susanoo threads exist; Weekend Weebs logged it without filing a court case. Storehouse next to Kamui, paper next to Konan, homage, not theft. A support blade that sprouts an owl over Japan is the serial showing the childhood magazine without reprinting it.
After chapter 126 the book took an announced month. One person, a war flashback, and a mineral that needed a real smith’s vocabulary. The manga guide keeps the dates. The goldfish page keeps the fins. Sunday still belongs to him.
The 2026 shelf
Circulation crossed 4 million by April 2026. Volume 11, Heroes, 1 May. Volume 12 solicited for 4 September. Japan Expo Daruma for Best Action Manga. The first twenty minutes of the Cypic series toured from July 2026. He talked to a real swordsmith so Part 2’s smelting would not be cosplay. Chapter 129 puts that homework inside a fire Chiaki has to pull him through. The author page’s older jokes (Naruto, Winter Soldier, goldfish not koi) are still true.
