Chapter 1 was the most-viewed new title on MANGA Plus in its first week. Volume 1, published 2 February 2024, takes its title from this issue: Mission.
The shop before the wound
Hokazono opens on craft. Kunishige Rokuhira is the swordsmith who made the Enchanted Blades that ended the Seitei War, and he is also a father who still runs a shop as if the war were a finished job. Chihiro is fifteen in the flashback and already good with his hands. The book wants you to love the room. It is about to take the room away.
A lot of Jump first chapters open on the fight. This one opens on the thing the fight will be about: a civilian life that was real. The bowl on the table, the cellar he could not smash, the seventh blade forged as a counter rather than a weapon of state. Those objects get their own encyclopedia pages later. In chapter 1 they are just furniture you are supposed to miss.
The raid, in one cut
The Hishaku do not get a speech in chapter 1. They get a night. Three sorcerers. Kunishige dies at thirty-seven. The six wartime blades leave. Enten — the seventh, never on the Kamunabi’s books — stays with the son. Three years later the boy on the floor is the man in the cafe.
The longer version of that night, including Hokuto, Uran, Kasen’s leak, and Ibuki’s murder in the same campaign, lives on the raid page. Chapter 1 is the version that fits in a first issue: enough to make the mission legible, not enough to make the Hishaku a cast list. Yura is later. The first chapter does not need him on panel.
The cafe
Present-tense Chihiro is eighteen and already working. The three men who pick the wrong table are a demonstration, not a “first villain.” Enten cuts. Goldfish swim in the cut. Shiba arrives like an adult who has been doing this cleanup for three years and is tired of it and will keep doing it anyway.
The chapter’s title is “Mission.” The mission is already specific: retrieve the stolen Enchanted Blades, kill the Hishaku who took them, and do it without becoming the kind of swordsman Kunishige would have refused to forge for. “Get stronger” is not the brief. The shop’s ethics are the brief, carried into a city that no longer has the shop.
What the chapter plants
- Enten’s look — black blade, goldfish, a weapon that does not advertise itself as a national treasure. True Realm is later. The fish are already the household made into a fighting language.
- Shiba — teleportation, leftovers, the only friend of Kunishige still in the room. Age 39. He will not sign a contract.
- The Hishaku — a name, a method, not yet a face. Flame tattoos come later. The fire-gate comes later.
- The city — Tokyo as a place where sorcerers already work in public if you know which cafes to avoid. The underworld chapters keep that promise. File: underworld.
- The public count — six wartime blades. The seventh was never registered. The whole series is people counting wrong.
Where the first issue sends you
