Shonen books love a party. Kagurabachi has one, but it is not a guild with a name. It is a set of people who have decided, for different reasons, that Chihiro Rokuhira is worth the next room. Some of them are adults. One of them is a child. One of them is a government weapon who would rather be a person. Character files start at Chihiro.
Togo Shiba — the adult who stayed
Thirty-nine. Birthday 15 October. Kunishige’s friend. Chihiro’s remaining parent in everything but law. Teleportation: extraction, infiltration, civilian evacuation, the joke until it is the only exit. He left the Kamunabi when Kunishige hid. He will not sign a blade because the contract would take this away. Cafe Haru Haru is the civilian door. He cooks. He lies to institutions so the boy can keep a shop’s ethics in a city that does not have a shop anymore.
The circle does not exist without him. He is the reason Chihiro has a kitchen to come back to. Three years of underworld work is Shiba’s commute as much as the son’s. File: Shiba. Cafe: Haru Haru.
Hakuri Sazanami — the brother who switched houses
The Rakuzaichi’s gift to the book. A discarded son who could not use Isou until he stopped scattering his own spirit energy. Then both Isou and the Storehouse answered. Historically almost unique in the clan: two people ever held both. He registers a person and their charged objects and moves Enchanted Blades across the country. That circuit is why the Kamunabi keep Chihiro and why the Hishaku hunt the discarded son.
After the auction, “Chihiro and Hakuri” is a unit both sides have to plan around. Kudo dies for Hakuri in headquarters because both maps have a moving closet on them. The circle has a second swordsman’s shadow even when Hakuri is not holding Enten. File: Hakuri. Architecture: Storehouse.
Char Kyonagi — the reason the work has a face
Last of a regenerative clan. Birthday 21 December. Sojo held her as a Datenseki stabilizer. Chihiro’s group holds her as a child. She is the first proof that the war can produce a living civilian instead of only a dead sorcerer. Chihiro’s decision to keep her, against Azami’s advice to avoid Sojo, is the first time the revenge plot has to share the page with a person who is not a combatant.
Sojo dies with her still in the building. That is staging with a thesis. Chapter 2’s color page is her entrance. Volume 1’s opening cast includes her even when the jackets later prefer Hiyuki and Hakuri. File: Char.
Hiyuki Kagari — the government’s fire
Flame Bone of the Starving. Inherited skeleton, licensed by the bureau, a permission slip you can see through the ribs. She stood next to Enchanted Blades in the text. She is also the person in the building most willing to treat Chihiro as a colleague instead of a file. The circle includes her the way a wartime circle includes the officer who will still take your call.
She will not leave the Kamunabi for him. The book is more interesting because she will not. Tafuku Mihara’s duel domain is her referee: two people, one match, then the street returns. File: Hiyuki. Essay: Flame Bone.
Hinao — the sit-down
Runs Cafe Haru Haru. Shiba’s civilian door. The lights between jobs. Char ends up here. The voiced comic already gave Hinao a throat: Akari Tadano. The cafe is furniture the way the bowl is furniture. You eat. Then someone names a sighting. File: Hinao.
The wider ring
Soshiro Azami, Coin, strongest of the Kamunabi heads, helped hide the smith. Useful. Not safe. Not family. He wanted Chihiro away from Sojo. Chihiro stayed. File: Azami.
Yoji Uruha, Kumeyuri’s bearer, banquet and play. The announced-dead swordsman whose file is more complicated than the announcement. He walks into the HQ raid to keep Hakuri’s closet alive. File: Uruha.
Iori Samura, the daughter the Masumi sealed so the Hishaku would hunt a man without a child on the board. After Black Suzaku she inherits Tobimune. File: Iori.
