Who left, who stayed
Togo Shiba left the bureau when the smith hid. Soshiro Azami stayed. One of them becomes the cafe uncle with a teleport and a coat. The other becomes the man inside the building who can still move a table. Both were at the wartime edge. Both loved the same household.
The present-tense book needs both exits. Chihiro needs a guardian who is not the state. The state needs a man who did not walk out. See Azami, Shiba, Shiba and Kunishige, Azami and Kunishige.
